Dentures have been around for centuries, and while they’ve improved in material and comfort, their basic design remains mostly unchanged. With the invention of implants, however, many people have opted away from the traditional dentures and chosen implant supported dentures instead.
Traditional Dentures vs. Implant Dentures: What’s the Difference?
While there are many differences in how these two methods are created and employed, the largest difference comes down to one thing – stability.
Standard dentures are held in place by suction, by a special denture adhesive, or a combination of the two. While this works well on average, it is possible for dentures to slip out of place or move around when laughing, sneezing, or when eating certain foods. Standard dentures must also be removed and cleaned every day, to remove both the adhesive cream and any food stuck under the dentures.
Another reason dentures become unstable is due to bone loss. Without the tooth roots to provide chewing force, the jaw bone begins to shrink in a process called resorption. This shrinkage changes the shape of your jaw and affects how dentures fit. Dentures need continuous adjustments, and new ones may be needed eventually.
Implant support provides a solution to both of these issues. The titanium post is anchored into the jaw. Since titanium is bio-compatible, the jaw bone fuses with the post, making it a permanent part of the jaw. This provides strong support for dentures that is unaffected by chewing, speaking, or other activities.
Furthermore, by fusing with the bone, the implants take the place of tooth roots to reestablish the missing chewing pressure. As the jaw bone continues to receive stimulation, it preserves bone density and keeps your jaw strong, healthy, and in good shape.
Should You Consider Implant Dentures?
Not everyone is a candidate for implants, so your dentist or specialist will examine your oral and overall health to determine if you are eligible for this treatment. If the jaw bone is weak or has shrunk, you may need a bone graft to strengthen the jaw before the procedure.
